Sounding Art
If you were to build an instrument, what would be most important to you: How it sounds? How it looks? How easy it is to play? How easy it is to transport? These are questions every instrument builder answers when designing an instrument. In this exhibition of modern instruments by Perry Cook, Lisa Coons, Anne Hege, Jay Kreimer, Peter Musselman, and Dan Truman, we can see, hear and even play some of the ways these musical inventors are balancing functional and aesthetic priorities. We can experience how the sound changes when it isn’t a keyboard being played, but a metal tendril being stroked, a long ribbon being pulled or a suitcase being tapped. Sounding Art presents a new orchestra of instruments that change how we hear, see and make music.
