This show brings together two artists who use line and volume to delight our senses. John Wood draws on paper that has a rich, skin-like quality, which yields to his marks in a way that neither canvas nor a harder surface can. Working directly with a model, he uses connections between the figure, the drawing, and his own aesthetic to visualize rapture.Cuong Ta often describes his work as an obsession with line, positive and negative space, and the tension between boundary and flow. He creates pots and wall installations to give us a sense of wonder, drama, and play all at the same time.

CuongTa began working with clay by shaping it on the potter's wheel, perfecting form and controlling design with the immediacy and responsiveness of that technique. Today he uses slabs of clay to explore resist methods and design elements more deliberately, while playing with the ideas of profile and function. Cuong's ceramic works have been exhibited throughout the San Francisco Bay area and are represented by the deYoung Museum Store. (Click here to read a review.)
John Wood’s drawings are created with successive layers of graphite, pigment stick, and other media. They are often adhered to panel, with several layers of wax to seal and protect the surface eliminating the need for glass. This minimizes separation from the surface to include the viewer more fully in a total experience of the artwork. John Woods works on paper have gallery representation in San Francisco, Berkeley, Salt Lake City, and Denver, and have been reviewed by Kenneth Baker. (Click here to read Baker's review.)
